Social and ethical issues involved in the storage and retrieval of data is largely concerned with ensuring data can only be accessed and used by authorised users for authorised purposes. Data can be protected from unauthorised access through the use of security measures such as encryption, but these methods cannot stop an authorised user from accessing this data for unauthorised purposes. In essence, every security measure used to protect data can be circumvented in some way meaning no data is every truly secure.
