What
is a system?
A system is a collection of resources and processes that operate
together to achieve some common purpose and hence fulfil some need. An example
of this in action would be if you would want to slow a car down, you would need
various resources or components such as the brake pedal, brake pads, brake
discs, tyres, and many other components to complete the process of slowing the
car down. All the mini components are mini systems that operate together as one
to perform a larger system. Everything that influences or is influenced by the
system is said to be in the environment.
System
engineers from different fields and professions use diagrams and models to help
describe systems. It gives a clear image to the engineers of the whole overview
of the resources and processes of a system. There are a number of different
methods of representing the system diagrammatically. This includes context
diagrams, data flow diagrams and system flowcharts. Data flow diagrams model the
data movements within the system whereas the system flowcharts describe the
logic of the system together with its components and major data
flows
